In this post, I’m walking you through a bedroom design from a current project. Every piece on the vision board below is from Wayfair—which makes it easy one-cart shopping for your rental.

Designing a Wooded Florida Bedroom

The project I’m working on is in St. Augustine, Florida, which is a coastal town with loads of charm.

This house, though, sits back in the Florida woods instead of on the water. Florida “woods” aren’t piney or alpine; they’re all scrubby palms, live oaks, and swampy green light. Instead of another cliche bright blue and white beach room, this room feels just right in its wood setting.

The Rifle Paper Co. rug pulls in those greens and browns and sets the palette for the whole space. I then echoed those colors in the lamps, wood tones, and bedding so the room feels rooted in its setting.

Testing AI for Room Visualizations

If you’re over 35, you may have seen those YouTube ads saying things like, “young kids are starting businesses with AI, and you’re still just using ChatGPT,” while they sell some kind of AI course. I’m mostly in the “still just using ChatGPT” camp, and I’m guessing most of my readers are too.

My husband, however, is abreast of most AI improvements for his research. He’s teaching an AI course at the Cambridge University business school starting this fall. I hear a lot about what’s changing, and one thing he flagged for me was how much ChatGPT’s image tool just improved. Last week, they launched an update, and the jump in quality was impressive.

So here is how I created an image of this room. I started with the vision board you see here, with the furniture plan of the room in the upper left corner.

Then I uploaded that image into ChatGPT and gave it a few simple instructions… Make the wood floor a warm tone two shades darker than the furniture, show the room from the doorway, and create a photorealistic version of this design as if it were built out in real life. I also asked for a simple piece of artwork with blue coral above the dresser.

This is what it gave me.

I did have to go back and forth to tweak things. The model still isn’t great at being consistent from edit to edit. When I asked it to adjust the ceiling height to match my actual property, it would sometimes randomly change the chair or another detail for no good reason.

AI also struggles with exact size and scale. It handled the furniture layout well because I had it clearly mapped on my board and floor plan. But, it could not nail the window placement or ceiling height perfectly.

Still, as a fast visualization tool, it’s pretty amazing. It took just seconds to upload my board and floor plan, type in a few prompts, and get a decent sense of how this room will look once it’s installed. Very fun!
