If you’ve worked with me—or we’ve chatted about furniture —you probably already know I have strong opinions about what works (and what absolutely doesn’t) in a home and a rental. So I thought I’d share a few honest thoughts about one of the brands I always come back to, both for my own home and my clients’: Article.

Why I keep using Article as a designer

As a designer, I’m often asked for furniture recommendations. One of my go-to choices is always Article. Not just because they’re stylish and constantly evolving the modern furniture landscape, but because they hold up—even in rentals—with the roughest of guests.

How Article runs things

If you’re not already familiar, Article isn’t trying to be a “big retail experience.” They don’t have brick and mortar retail stores. You pick your pieces online, and they show up on your doorstep. I actually appreciate the lack of brick-and-mortar fuss, partly because it cuts out any unnecessary markup, and partly because as a designer who works mostly virtually, it allows me to get what I need online. Their website is great. And the business model is direct-to-consumer, so what you see is what you get—the price, the materials, the delivery, all streamlined.

Why I recommend Article to clients (and use it myself)

Quality is the first thing. When I spec a sofa or a set of dining chairs, I want my clients to be confident it won’t collapse under their guests. I’ve had pieces consistently arrive for projects exactly as promised: no weird surprises, no color mix-ups, no broken parts. And if there do happen to be problems, Article’s customer service team is responsive and always available. What I care about is consistency, and Article delivers.

Their catalog stays modern, fresh, but not so trendy that you’ll feel the need to replace it in a year.

Favorites that have made the cut

Sofa beds

Let’s start with sofa beds. If you’ve ever slept on something that felt like folded cardboard, you’ll appreciate Article’s version. Your guests will actually sleep well, which is all I hope for when setting up a rental or a spare room.

Sofas

Next up, sofas. The sofa in your Airbnb needs to look great (obviously), be super comfy AND withstand over-enthusiastic children throwing themselves onto it repeatedly. If you choose a fabric sofa, my advice is to always choose a “performance” fabric. These are going to be harder wearing and easier to clean—absolutely essential in a short-term rental! (Scroll down for more tips on choosing the right fabric…)

Dining furniture

The dining area is a really key space in an Airbnb. So often hosts will put effort into the sleeping and lounging spaces, but forget about that all important spot where your guests come together to share food and conversation after a busy day. Article has a great selection of hard-wearing and beautiful dining room furniture. And make sure you have enough dining seating to cater for all the guests you can accommodate. If you’re short on space, then choose an extendable table.

I’ve used Article’s sofas and dining chairs in everything from my own house to commercial projects. If a chair can hold up in an assisted living facility, you know it can take a beating in an Airbnb and come out fine!

Bedroom furniture

Article is your one-stop shop for bedroom furniture. Whether you want to mix and match, or make life easy and shop from one of the bedroom furniture collections. Whatever you do when it comes to the bedroom, be sure not to scrimp on the mattress and bedding. These are so important when it comes to ensuring your guests get a good night’s sleep. Well-rested guests = happy guests. And happy guests = repeat bookings and five-star reviews! Check out this blog for my go-to purchases for bedding and mattresses.

Quick fabric tip from a designer

If you’re considering any upholstered pieces, Article will send you fabric samples. Always, always get a sample! You won’t regret this extra step in the end to make sure everything is going to come together as you’d hoped.

So there you have it, friend. Hopefully you’re now an Article convert, if you weren’t already!

Happy Shopping!
