I've said it before, I'll say it again.
One of the best things about being involved in the short term rental space is meeting a community of other amazing hosts. Today I'm sharing a Q&A with some talented hosts from California, Hanan and Joe, who clearly must not sleep what with their full time jobs, multiple short term rental properties, AND 3 gorgeous children to raise.
Let's dive in and learn what they have to teach us about hosting the right way.
Tell us about yourselves!
We are Hanan and Joe, a husband & wife team with a passion for interior design, renovation, entrepreneurship, traveling and family. We own and run short term rentals in both the Napa Valley and Lake Tahoe while also raising 3 lovely children (Jacob, Aminah & Jordan) and working full time jobs. Joe works as a registered nurse and Hanan works as a Realtor in the Napa/Sonoma region.
How did your Short Term Rental journey begin?
In 2015, we...
I've been stalking this gorgeous North Carolina mountain cabin renovation since I first discovered them on Insta months ago.
There is a good reason why this cabin is oh-so right. LB, the female half of the couple that owns this mountain house is an interior designer, and has a thriving design business located in Nashville, TN called Both Minds Design.
Loree Beth Harris, who goes by LB, and her husband Will bought and renovated this cabin to share with the world as a short term rental, but also as a reprieve to rest and recharge as a family of 4 when they want to get out of Nashville and head to the mountains.
Dive into this Q&A with LB and Will to learn all the things about this well designed vacation rental in the woods near Asheville, North Carolina.
(P.S.- Stick around to the end to 'shop the look' that LB created in the living and dining Room!)
What's a design Audit, you ask?
A designer's eyes (in this case mine) on a short term rental property through its current listing photos. From these photos I outline:
If you've got 18 minutes to kill and want to soak up all of the design advice I give to this amazing couple for their AirBNB, check out the video above! It is FULL of actionable steps to elevate this (already pretty cute) property. The goal in all of this: to maximize the ROI for the owners of course!
Below is a visual recap of the video with the links and resources for you! I hope you find it helpful!! (Please let me know if you'd like to see more content like...

Symon and James together recently published Airbnb for Dummies (1st Edition), and they're here to share what I think is the most interesting section of the book from a design perspective to help demystify the elusive Airbnb Plus Program for my readers.
The Airbnb PLUS program, launched in 2018 to only 13 cities, is now widely available in most cities in an attempt by the platform to attract higher income and low price sensitivity travelers with a more premium experience offering.
As an Airbnb host, you may be...
Decorating an Airbnb (or other short term rental property) is a slightly different art than decorating a personal home where clients live. As an interior designer who's been at it for 15 years, doing both commercial and residential design, I find Airbnb design is THE MOST fun kind of project for lots of reasons.
Whether you're designing an Airbnb that you own, or doing it for someone else, hold onto your hats and let's get this party started.
I mean, don't get me wrong, this process isn't easy. There's SO MUCH to do, and SO MUCH to purchase. And time is money. You may be tempted to just start stuffing generic-not-so-bad Ikea/Target crap in the whole place to call it done, open it up, and start getting some return on that investment.
But I really encourage you to take a breath, step back, and focus on the design of your Airbnb at the outset. The key to your success in this endeavor is standing apart. It's advantageous for you to think about how your...
Is the sofa in your Airbnb's living room in front of a big blank wall? A blank wall always seems to grow and become more boring once the sofa is positioned in front, right? It can be overwhelming knowing what to do with this prominent blank canvas.
However, there are a lot of different ways to bring that wall to life, and I'm here to help!
Let's break down the options and look at some beautiful examples done by some amazing designers.
Gallery walls are always fun and can really allow your creativity to soar with the endless options for what to add. Also, they can be less expensive than buying large pieces of real art, depending on your approach. However, I totally get that the term "endless options" is enough to send many of you into a tizzy of anxiety, and I get it. I am the exact same way without a well thought through plan.
How about a mini-tutorial?! Let's dive in:
(a) Think through your Color...
When you're selecting furniture for your Airbnb Living Room, the sofa should be one of the FIRST items you consider.
It's a really large purchase, and I understand completely that it can feel quite daunting. This piece will get a lot of use and abuse from your guests, and you want it to last!
To help on your quest, I've rounded up my top 8 fav options for you here!
These choices represent a variety of different styles that I feel are versatile chameleons able to slide into almost any style genre you choose for your space. (<----hyperlink style quiz at style genre)
When it comes settling on a sofa there is more than just the quality to consider. There is also...
